Welcome to our Dojo Newsletter
Birthday Corner Happy Birthday in December
Christopher Naraine, Joanna Kurylowicz, Robyn kirkwood, Jennifer Piitz, Welcome New Students Please Welcome to our Dojo! Heard Around The Dojo Friendship Night Dec 2005
Thank you too all who attended our December 22nd monthly Karate Friendship Night. We had a good workout and shared ideas. As usual we got together after at Boston Pizza for some great conversation and food. This time we had some past (and maybe renewing) students join us. It was a very enjoyable evening for everyone. Please plan on joining us in January. Click on the pictures above to see more photos. Page 2 has now been added. Family Christmas Party 2005 Thank you to all who braved the snow storm Thursday December 15th and made it out to our Annual Family Christmas Party. We were small in numbers (due to weather) but we had a good time. There were games, food and lots of talking. We even watched some old video clips of present and past students during demonstrations and testings. Thank you again to all who made it out and especially to all those who helped with the evening. Community Caring at Christmas At this time of the year we would like to help others in our community less fortunate then ourselves. Renseikan Dojo once again has taken on two families through the Children's Aid "Community Caring at Christmas" program. We will be collecting new unwrapped toys and clothing as well as monetary contributions to buy food and gift certificates for our two families. The specific wish lists, age, size and interests will be going home with the students this week. We have until December 15th to bring donations to the dojo. We will be sending home information about this program and about how you can get involved. Adult Christmas Party Saturday December 3rd was the date of the Renseikan Martial Arts Dojo Annual Christmas Party. Ben and Susan hosted this year and the evening was a huge success. Great conversation, Fantastic food and very questionable karaoke. Some people couldn't resist working out and took advantage of the home gym. We should have more pictures later. Annual Fall Dojo Cleaning
The Annual Dojo Fall Cleaning took place Saturday November 19th following the Jodo class. It was well attended, showing that students understand the Shinto significance to a clean dojo. Both Shinto and Zen Buddhism are important to martial arts at Renseikan Dojo. The Shinto side is very concerned with cleanliness and attention to detail as well as reverence to all of nature and attention to dealings with each other. The Zen side is very much concerned with being in the moment, of attention to detail without the labouring of the mind. No mind. But always aware of what is going on and aware of the way things are. When we clean we must keep this in mind and make sure we put everything back as it was. Not because the placement is important but rather because the attention to detail that we take leads us to being in the state of Now. I had asked one of the students to take some pictures with my camera but they did not so all we have are these two pictures. There were many students out helping and I would like to thank them all for all their help And yes, the person on the left in the second photo is our long lost Carl Ignatius - now of Halifax. Carl Senpai is doing very well and was hear to visit his parents and family for a few days but could not leave without stopping by the dojo and seeing his 'other' father. We wish Carl Senpai all the best in his new life. He will return to Aikido soon - when it is time. First All Canadian Jodo Grading Panel During the CKF Jodo seminar on Sunday November 13th, the CKF held it's first ever all Canadian Jodo Examination. All seven candidates challenging for Ikkyu (first kyu) were successful. The seminar was attended by representatives from all the Canadian Jodo Dojo. Congratulations to Steve Kubien and Robert Tompkins of Renseikan Dojo for passing their test. Also congratulations to Barbra Esher (Baltimore MD) also of Renseikan Dojo on her Ikkyu test. Aikido Schedule Change Attention all Aikido students. The evening class schedule has changed effective November. The Children's class will start at 8:15pm and go until 9:00pm. The adult class will from 8:15pm until 9:30pm. Please download a new schedule or pick one up at the dojo. Annual Demonstration November 6, 2005
We had a great turn out for our Anuual Demonstration last Sunday. Spectators had the opportunity to see two hours of children and adults performing the various aspects of Karate-Do, Aikido and Jodo. The demonstration was followed by a pot luck party. For those that had to miss it this year see Page 1 and Page 2 of pictures. More pictures will be added as they become available from students and parents. There is also a video / DVD available of the 2005 Annual Demonstration coming soon. Friendship Night Thanks to all who make it out every month on Friendship - Kata Night We had a great evening of Kihon(basics), Kata, Bunkai(application of kata) and Yakusoku Kumite(Pre-arranged sparring). We also had a great time at Boston Pizza afterwards. Plan to join us next time (December 22nd). Renseikan Dojo Crests The Renseikan Dojo Crests are now available at the dojo. They can be used in many ways, on your dogi it should go on the left side, over your heart. Upcoming Events
Click on any of the upcoming events listed below to learn more: Family Christmas Party Come celebrate the season with us Thursday December 15th from 6pm - 7:30pm in the dojo. We will have games and pizza and fun for everyone. All students and their families are invited for this annual event. So we can order enough pizza, please email us or call or sign up in the dojo. This will make sure everyone will have a good time. Christmas Wrap Party In conjunction with the "Community Caring at Christmas" program, on Friday December 16th at 9am, we will get together in the dojo to wrap all the gifts donated for our two families. They must be brought into the Childrens' Aid on Friday afternoon. The more hands wrapping, the better. Karate Kata Night We would like to invite any karate-ka who practice Matsubyashi-Ryu to join us for the last Thursday of every month. After a good warm-up of kihon (basics) we start kata practice and sometimes also add Bunkai (application) and Yakusoku Kumite (pre-arranged sparring) practice to the evening. Our dojo is open to all, regardless of rank or associations. This is a non-political dojo and a fun night of training together in the true spirit of Nagamine Shoshin Sensei's Karate-Do. If you are interested in joining us please contact us for directions and times or feel free to drop in for the 8pm adult class on the last Thursday of each month. The next Kata night is Thursday December 22nd On Wednesday December 21st we will be doing our "Hajime" training in the adult Aikido class. "Hajime" means to begin and we will be doing techniques rapidly on that command. It is an excellent cardio workout as well as an excellent training tool. When you must react quickly over and over to a command, you have no time to think about what you are going to do - you can only do. That is important in the martial arts. Be sure not to miss this class. Winter Holidays The dojo will be closed for it's annual winter holidays from Friday December 23rd to Saturday January 7th. The dojo will reopen on Monday January 9th, 2006. These holidays correspond to the Durham School Board's winter holidays.
