Robert Tompkins

Old Dojo on Clements

Center at May Seminar in Guelph

On Saturday November 22nd, 2008 Robert Tompkins passed away. He was in a battle with cancer and fought until the end. Robert,an accomplished martial artist, trained in Jodo where he had attained the rank of Shodan but would have been Nidan if he hadn't had to take the last year off to focus all his efforts in this battle. Those who new him were very aware of his warrior spirit and tenacity when doing Jodo and were equally aware of the soft, humerous and gentle man when not involved in Jodo. It was an honor to know him and to train with him. His Jodo was top notch. He will be sadly missed at Renseikan Dojo and I am sure he has not stopped training, he is just in a "different dojo" now.

The funeral with be at Church Of The Master on Lawrence at Bellamy, on Friday at 10am. Visitation will be Wednesday and Thursday from 2-4pm and 6-9pm both days at Giffen and Mack Funeral Home in West Hill. Please google Giffen and Mack Funeral Homes at 4115 Lawrence Ave E Toronto, ONT for directions.

Kobudo Seminar with Sensei Yoshiko Dometrich

Some of our students had the opportunity to train in Ryu-Kyu Kobudo Hozon Shin Ko Kai under Sensei Yoshiko Dometrich 8th dan Kyoshi. They worked on Sai and Nunchaku. Everyone had a great time and learned a lot over the 4 hour seminar at Anshin Dojo in Mississauga. Thanks to Sensei Steve Trombley for organizing this event.

Our new weapons rack

A huge Thank You goes to Tony Gibson for his very creative work on making a new weapons rack for the dojo. With everyone learning Sai and Nunchaku and Tuifa, all the weapons were piling up on the floor. Tony asked if he could make a weapons rack for the dojo. With the help of Don O'Connell the rack was installed on Tuesday morning (Oct 28th) after the day class. Thank you again Tony.

WMKA World Seminar - New York

The World Seminar October 3-6, 2006 in Long Island, New York was a great success. It was one of the best seminar I have attended in years. Soke was in full teaching mode and so was Shinzo Sensei, who taught one Sai kata and demonstrated a nunchaku kata. It was decided last minute not to teach nunchaku because they are prohibited weapons in New York (as they are in Ontario as well). We were a little dissapointed but Soke made up for that in aces with some oyo bunkai for Naihanchi and Wankan kata. Gerard Capeillo Sensei, who hosted the seminar as well as hosted the Dojo Owner's dinner at his home, was full of energy and a joy to work with. Williams Sensei (7th dan) was a treat to work with and a perfect gentleman (when he wasn't trying to take your head off). It was a time to see so many old friends and to make many new ones. I think this world seminar was truly inspiring for everyone who attended.

Aikido Night

Corby Chapin had hurt his knee but instead of staying at home, he decided to come out to his Aikido class anyway and test our his super new toy - a new digital camera. The results will be here soon. He did this in June but I have just not had the time to sort out the pictures, resize them and get them up on the web site. We really should be using Flicker or something but until then I will continue to do it the very old way of placing each picture up on the site. I will try to get at least some up this week. Thank you very much Corby, they are excellent pics. I am still trying to get more pics up.

Bring A Friend Week

Introduce your friends or family to the martial arts. During the Week of November 10th & November 24th, you can bring as many people as you like to try a martial arts class with you. All we need is a signed waiver (by a parent if the person is under 18 years old) and tell them to bring track pants and a t-shirt for the class.

Karate Friendship Night

We would like to invite any karate-ka who practice Matsubyashi-Ryu to join us for the last Thursday of every month. After a good warm-up of kihon (basics) we start kata practice and sometimes also add Bunkai (application) and Yakusoku Kumite (pre-arranged sparring) practice to the evening. Our dojo is open to all, regardless of rank or associations. This is a non-political dojo and a fun night of training together in the true spirit of Nagamine Shoshin Sensei's Karate-Do. If you are interested in joining us please contact us for directions and times or feel free to drop in for the 8:45pm adult class on the last Thursday of each month. The next Kata night is Thursday November 27th
