Heard Around The Dojo Annual Fall Dojo Cleaning
The Annual Dojo Fall Cleaning took place Saturday November 19th following the Jodo class. It was well attended, showing that students understand the Shinto significance to a clean dojo. Both Shinto and Zen Buddhism are important to martial arts at Renseikan Dojo. The Shinto side is very concerned with cleanliness and attention to detail as well as reverence to all of nature and attention to dealings with each other. The Zen side is very much concerned with being in the moment, of attention to detail without the labouring of the mind. No mind. But always aware of what is going on and aware of the way things are. When we clean we must keep this in mind and make sure we put everything back as it was. Not because the placement is important but rather because the attention to detail that we take leads us to being in the state of Now. I had asked one of the students to take some pictures with my camera but they did not so all we have are these two pictures. There were many students out helping and I would like to thank them all for all their help And yes, the person on the left in the second photo is our long lost Carl Ignatius - now of Halifax. Carl Senpai is doing very well and was hear to visit his parents and family for a few days but could not leave without stopping by the dojo and seeing his 'other' father. We wish Carl Senpai all the best in his new life. He will return to Aikido soon - when it is time. First All Canadian Jodo Grading Panel During the CKF Jodo seminar on Sunday November 13th, the CKF held it's first ever all Canadian Jodo Examination. All seven candidates challenging for Ikkyu (first kyu) were successful. The seminar was attended by representatives from all the Canadian Jodo Dojo. Congratulations to Steve Kubien and Robert Tompkins of Renseikan Dojo for passing their test. Also congratulations to Barbra Esher (Baltimore MD) also of Renseikan Dojo on her Ikkyu test. Aikido Schedule Change Attention all Aikido students. The evening class schedule has changed effective November. The Children's class will start at 8:15pm and go until 9:00pm. The adult class will from 8:15pm until 9:30pm. Please download a new schedule or pick one up at the dojo. Annual Demonstration November 6, 2005
We had a great turn out for our Anuual Demonstration last Sunday. Spectators had the opportunity to see two hours of children and adults performing the various aspects of Karate-Do, Aikido and Jodo. The demonstration was followed by a pot luck party. For those that had to miss it this year see Page 1 and Page 2 of pictures. More pictures will be added as they become available from students and parents. There is also a video / DVD available of the 2005 Annual Demonstration coming soon. Halloween 2005 Thank you Ben and Susan who held a Halloween Party Saturday night. Everyone enjoyed themselves. Ben and Susan really out did themselves. We look forward to next year. We all promise to be in costume next year, we really didn't know!!!! The New Torakan Dojo Congratulations to Adam Chin Leung Kam and the opening of his brand new Torakan Dojo. Adam has sent up some pictures and he certainly has done a fantastic job in creating his dojo. Here are some pictures of the beautiful Torakan Dojo in Trinidad. We are looking forward to visiting the dojo soon. Watanabe Sensei Seminars Shihan Watanabe Ikuo Sensei, 7th dan Yoshinkan Aikido, (Ayase Dojo Tokyo, Japan and Perth, Australia and the Hombu Dojo Tokyo, Japan) made a return visit to Renseikan Dojo this year. He was hosted by our dojo for four days and taught classes for three of those days. Monday was spent sightseeing. We were very lucky to have intimate classes with Watanabe Sensei and this format allowed the students to really learn. Shihan Watanabe Sensei will be a regular guest Instructor at Renseikan Dojo. We did not get any pictures from Monday but Here are some pictures from the other days. More should follow. Friendship Night Thanks to all who make it out every month on Friendship - Kata Night We had a great evening of Kihon(basics), Kata, Bunkai(application of kata) and Yakusoku Kumite(Pre-arranged sparring). We also had a great time at Boston Pizza afterwards. Plan to join us next time (November 24th). Renseikan Dojo Crests The Renseikan Dojo Crests are now available at the dojo. They can be used in many ways, on your dogi it should go on the left side, over your heart. Upcoming Events
Click on any of the upcoming events listed below to learn more: Annual Fall Dojo Cleaning All Adults students!! Join us on Saturday November 19th at 1pm (right after the Jodo class) as we prepare the dojo for winter. We clean the dojo from the top(lights) down to the bottom (under the mats) and everything in between. The more hands the faster and easier the work. Please bring vacuums, buckets, rags etc. As everyone knows, the care and cleaning of the dojo is the responsibility of its members, and twice a year we all take the opportunity to really dig in and clean everything. If you can not attend this important event please let one of your senpai know, otherwise we will be looking forward to seeing you out at 1pm. Shorin-Ryu Dhyan Karate Dojo Visit Special Karate Class: On Monday, November 28th all karate students are invited to visit Shorin-Ryu Dhyan Karate Dojo under Sensei Harry Persaud, and participate in their 7pm class. We will have a social gathering afterwards - (approx. 8:30pm). Please let us know at the dojo if you are going so they will know how many students to expect. The club is located in a Temple at 4345-14th Ave in Markham. There will be more information posted in the dojo. The dojo will be open as usual for Jodo and Aikido classes Karate Kata Night We would like to invite any karate-ka who practice Matsubyashi-Ryu to join us for the last Thursday of every month. After a good warm-up of kihon (basics) we start kata practice and sometimes also add Bunkai (application) and Yakusoku Kumite (pre-arranged sparring) practice to the evening. Our dojo is open to all, regardless of rank or associations. This is a non-political dojo and a fun night of training together in the true spirit of Nagamine Shoshin Sensei's Karate-Do. If you are interested in joining us please contact us for directions and times or feel free to drop in for the 8pm adult class on the last Thursday of each month. The next Kata night is Thursday November 24th On Wednesday November 23rd we will be doing our "Hajime" training in the adult Aikido class. "Hajime" means to begin and we will be doing techniques rapidly on that command. It is an excellent cardio workout as well as an excellent training tool. When you must react quickly over and over to a command, you have no time to think about what you are going to do - you can only do. That is important in the martial arts. Be sure not to miss this class. Fall Jodo Seminar and Kyu Examination On Sunday November 13th Renseikan Dojo will host the Fall CKF Jodo seminar and Kyu Examination. The seminar will run from 9am to 6pm. All jodo students are encouraged to attend. Any student wishing to take the examination must have their sensei submit all information or form to Renseikan Dojo on or before November 6th. You may submit the information by email The actual form and fees may be brought in on the examination date provided all information was submitted on or before November 6th. This is a CKF Jodo Kyu Examination and all students wishing to take the examination must be CKF members. Contact us by email for information regarding individual membership in the Canadian Kendo Federation. The examination will be held at 1:30pm.
