Heard Around the Dojo
Nagamine Sensei
In remembrance of Nagamine Shoshin Sensei (July 15, 1907 - November 2, 1997) the karate classes on Thursday night focused on Fukyu gata Ichi, the kata created by Nagamine Sensei in 1942, for the Okinawa school board. His kata and Fukyu gata Ni, were created to make karate easier to learn by school children. Although they may at first seem quite simple kata, they are very complex when studied by the advanced students. The adult class did Fukyu Gata Ichi 27 times. We then did 108 kicks and followed that with the Yakusoku Kumite (also developed by Nagamine Shoshin Sensei). We performed each of the first four pre-arranged sparring movements 27 times for a total of 108 Yakusoku Kumite. It was a energetic way to honour our founder, Nagamine Shoshin Sensei.
Halloween Party
Gale Wood hosted her annual Halloween Party and Pot-Luck dinner for the adult students and their spouses. It was a great success. Some of the guests went to great lengths to wear just the right costume and others just came as they were. Everyone enjoyed the socializing, eating and singing. Pat Vallejo gave everyone a treat with her wonderful voice during the otherwise humerous karaoke. We have a few pictures from the party and Yes, many of us felt that since we were not wearing our usual karate/aikido/jodo dogi, that regular clothes qualified as a costume. A Great Job Gale!!
Annual Demonstration
The Renseikan Annual Demonstration was a big success this year as Karate students demonstrated Karate Kata, Yakusoku Kumite, Bunkai, Kobudo and self-defense and Aikido students demonstrated Kihon Dosa, Basic, Intermediate and Advanced techniques, weapons, freestyle, fast and slow techniques and self-defense. The jodo students showed basic solo strikes, basic strikes against a sword and kata against a sword.
Participants ranged from 4 years old to 54 years old. They gave their all, in the true spirit of martial arts demonstrations. We should have taken the group photo before the demonstration started so those that had to leave earlier would have been included. But you will find lots of pictures coming soon and everyone will be in one or more pictures. The demonstration was followed by a sumptuous Pot-Luck dinner. Click on the above picture for a small sample of the pictures to come.
The video will also be avilable at the dojo soon.On-Line Student Manuals
