Heard Around The Dojo

Annual Fall Dojo Cleaning

Please join us after the Jodo class on Saturday October 31st for our Annual Fall Cleaning. We maintain the dojo on a daily basis but several times a year we clean the dojo from top to bottom and even under the mats. This is a big job so the more hands the faster it goes and of course the more fun it is. There will be a sign up sheet in the dojo so we gauge how long it will take. Please feel free to bring in extra cleaning supplies, vacuums, mops etc.

First Aid Course

We are planning to hold an all day Emergency First Aid and CPR course in the dojo. Please sign up in the dojo so we can plan this event. All adult students are invited to attend. The fee is going to be between $35 and $50 depending on the number of students attending (breakpoint is 15). More information is posted in the dojo.

New Karate Shodan

Congratulations to Tony Gibson who was awarded his Shodan by Soke Nagamine himself during Tony's recent three week stay in Okinawa. Tony had the wonderful and rare opportunity to train everyday with all the top sensei in Matsubayashi Ryu at the hombu dojo in Naha City, Okinawa, Japan.

New Aikido Shodan - Brandon Walker

Congratulations to Brandon Walker who successfully passed his Shodan (black belt) test on Wednesday September 2nd. Pictures will follow.

Help Feed the World

Help end world hunger

Please click on the new link on our sidebars (as well as above). By playing this educational game (vocabulary builder), you can help feed the world. The sponsors of this site donate 20 grains of rice for every correct answer you get while playing the game. They work with the United Nations World Food Program.

Please note that the Karate manual shows the Adult requirements and some items are not required for children or youth until a later rank.

Bring A Friend Week

Introduce your friends or family to the martial arts. During the Week of October 12th and the week of October 19th, you can bring as many people as you like to try a martial arts class with you. All we need is a signed waiver (by a parent if the person is under 18 years old) and tell them to bring track pants and a t-shirt for the class.

EFT Clinic

Many of you have heard me talk about EFT or Emotional Freedom Techniques, as a form of self help for virtually any problem you can think of. It is an easy tapping routine you learn to do on yourself which uses several key acupuncture points on the meridians. This energy healing technique was originally designed to cure people of phobias in record breaking time. Subsequently people have tried this very simple yet highly effective technique on a myriad of problems both physical and emotional. The key to getting very effective results with EFT is getting to the core issue underlying the problem. Working with someone, one-on-one or in a group, can often help you be more effective then on your own.

EFT group workshops are on the last Sunday of the month starting at 9am There will be a $20 fee for the session. The sessions are open to the public. Clinics will only run if sufficient numbers warrant it at that time, otherwise an alternate date will be arranged. Please call / write to register for the session in advance.

Aikido Hajime Class

On Thursday October 29th we will be doing our "Hajime" training in the adult Aikido class. "Hajime" means to begin and we will be doing techniques rapidly on that command. It is an excellent cardio workout as well as an excellent training tool. When you must react quickly over and over to a command, you have no time to think about what you are going to do - you can only do. That is important in the martial arts. Be sure not to miss this class.

Karate Friendship Night

We would like to invite any karate-ka who practice Matsubyashi-Ryu to join us for the last Thursday of every month. After a good warm-up of kihon (basics) we start kata practice and sometimes also add Bunkai (application) and Yakusoku Kumite (pre-arranged sparring) practice to the evening. Our dojo is open to all, regardless of rank or associations. This is a non-political dojo and a fun night of training together in the true spirit of Nagamine Shoshin Sensei's Karate-Do. If you are interested in joining us please contact us for directions and times or feel free to drop in for the 8:45pm adult class on the last Thursday of each month. The next Kata night is Thursday October 29th
