Halloween 2005

Thank you Ben and Susan who held a Halloween Party Saturday night. Everyone enjoyed themselves. Ben and Susan really out did themselves. We look forward to next year. We all promise to be in costume next year, we really didn't know!!!!

The New Torakan Dojo

Congratulations to Adam Chin Leung Kam and the opening of his brand new Torakan Dojo. Adam has sent up some pictures and he certainly has done a fantastic job in creating his dojo. Here are some pictures of the beautiful Torakan Dojo in Trinidad. We are looking forward to visiting the dojo soon.

Watanabe Sensei Seminars

Shihan Watanabe Ikuo Sensei, 7th dan Yoshinkan Aikido, (Ayase Dojo Tokyo, Japan and Perth, Australia and the Hombu Dojo Tokyo, Japan) made a return visit to Renseikan Dojo this year.

He was hosted by our dojo for four days and taught classes for three of those days. Monday was spent sightseeing. We were very lucky to have intimate classes with Watanabe Sensei and this format allowed the students to really learn.

Shihan Watanabe Sensei will be a regular guest Instructor at Renseikan Dojo. We did not get any pictures from Monday but Here are some pictures from the other days. More should follow.

Monthly Schedule Changes and Special Events

While we keep everything posted in the dojo, we know that many parents and students do not get a chance to read the notices so we have our monthly newsletter on the web. Some months have a lot of changes and special events and while we try to make this newsletter as readible as possible, often new items get missed. This new page will summarize the schedule changes and upcoming special events for the current month. We hope this is useful.

Karate In the Park

Sunday Oct 2nd we had a great day of Karate in the Park - Adam's Park- We spent four hours in the beautiful sunshine doing karate. Started with Kihon (basics) and Keri waza (kicks) - including the dreaded flying spinning back kick and the flying spinning double crescent kick. Then we focused on Kata (pre-arranged movements) but also worked on balance and maintaining our center as we preformed the kata on the side of a hill. We added some Kumite (Sparring) in both free style and drill format including two on one. We finished the day with Bunkai (application of the kata). If you missed this important event, you will not miss the next one. Click on the above picture for some pictures from our Karate Day.

Black Belt Dinner

Many of the black belts and their spouses got together at Sensei's home for evening of food and conversation. Thank you to everyone who were able to make it out and a special thank you to all that helped Belle with the food preperation. Click here for some pictures.

Rogers TV at the Dojo

Missing Picture of
Senpai Lynn Elwood Interview

Tuesday September 12th we had two visitors from Roger's TV. They had arranged to come in and film the adult class and did some short interviews with Sensei, Senpai Lynn Elwood and Donna Lipsett. Then Jeff Harrington of Roger's TV learned a quick block and takedown off camera and then got a chance to use it on camera as Jason Mike took on the role as attacker. Thanks to Roger's TV for taking the initiative and interest to highlight activities such as karate-do in it's News and Sports.

Getting Involved

I believe we have a great many talented writers in our dojo and many students with interesting questions and impressions of their past, present and future training. We would like to hear from you and so would everyone else. Write something for the Zen Living Newsletter and we will get your questions, comments or impressions up here on this web site or on our sister blog site. Your submission should be in Word, a Text based editor or simply as part of the body or an email to us.

Friendship Night

Thanks to all who made it out every month on Friendship - Kata Night We had a great evening of Kihon(basics), Kata, Bunkai(application of kata) and Yakusoku Kumite(Pre-arranged sparring). We also had a great time at Boston Pizza afterwards. Plan to join us next time (October 27th).

Renseikan Dojo Crests

The Renseikan Dojo Crests are now available at the dojo. They can be used in many ways, on your dogi it should go on the left side, over your heart.

We will have a pot luck dinner after the demonstration at the dojo. There will be a sign up sheet at the dojo for both the demonstration and pot luck party soon. Please sign up early or email us so we can arrange enough chairs and we can make proper plans for the actual demonstration.

Karate Kata Night

We would like to invite any karate-ka who practice Matsubyashi-Ryu to join us for the last Thursday of every month. After a good warm-up of kihon (basics) we start kata practice and sometimes also add Bunkai (application) and Yakusoku Kumite (pre-arranged sparring) practice to the evening. Our dojo is open to all, regardless of rank or associations. This is a non-political dojo and a fun night of training together in the true spirit of Nagamine Shoshin Sensei's Karate-Do. If you are interested in joining us please contact us for directions and times or feel free to drop in for the 8pm adult class on the last Thursday of each month. The next Kata night is Thursday October 27th

Aikido Hajime Class

On Wednesday October 26th we will be doing our "Hajime" training in the adult Aikido class. "Hajime" means to begin and we will be doing techniques rapidly on that command. It is an excellent cardio workout as well as an excellent training tool. When you must react quickly over and over to a command, you have no time to think about what you are going to do - you can only do. That is important in the martial arts. Be sure not to miss this class.

Jodo In the Park

On Sunday October 23rd we will be holding a special jodo class for all jodo students. Originally scheduled as an outdoor seminar in Adam's Park, but due to the forcast of rain all weekend we will hold the seminar at the dojo. The class will start at 12 noon and run until 4pm. The class is also open to jodo students in other dojo. The fee is $20.

Shorin-Ryu Dhyan Karate Dojo Visit

Note!! The visit to Shorin-Ryu Dhyan Dojo has been Post-Poned!!!
