Heard Around The Dojo

New Times for Day Classes

As of Thursday July 16th the Tuesday and Thursday morning classes will change from 9:15am to the NEW time of 10:00am. We look forward to seeing everyone out at the new time.

Kiyoyuki Terada Hanshi passing

Kiyoyuki Terada Hanshi passed away on July 13th. He was 87 years old and was still active in Yoshinkan Aikido. He will be sadly missed by everyone.

Future Aikido Student

Congratulations to Sempai Raymond and Malavanh Chong on the birth of their daughter Leilani Chong. She was born June 5th and came in at 6lb 4oz. Reese looks very happy to have a new sister. I apologize for being so late with the news. I found out late and then was on holidays so I finally have a chance to get the news up on the web site. Congratulations again!

Karate and Aikido Kyu Tests

On Saturday May 30, 2009 we held Karate and Aikido kyu tests. Everyone did their best and the results are in. Click on the above picture or here for more pictures. The next kyu grading will be coming in the summer.

Karasawa Sensei's Visit

Thursday May 21st my teacher, Karasawa Sensei 7th dan Yoshinkan Aikido honoured us with a visit. He offered lots of corrections and help to everyone training. It was impossible to tell he is retired from active Aikido. Many students were able to stay after the class so spend time eating, drinking and talking with Sensei. His instruction is certainly not limited to the mats. Thank you again Sensei for your visit and we will be having him out again soon.

May Jodo Seminar and Tests

The May long weekend was filled with Jodo at the University of Guelph as it is every May long weekend. The seminar was fantastic but I forgot to take any pictures. Joe took a couple of the Jodo examinations but I hope some more will come in.

Help Feed the World

The sponsors of this site donate 20 grains of rice for every correct answer you get while playing the game. They work with the United Nations World Food Program.

Aikido Kyu Tests

On Saturday May 30th, regular classes will be suspended to accommodate our Spring Aikido Kyu Tests. Tests will begin after the Karate Kyu Tests (approximately 11am) but there will be some time for warm up and free practice. The list of students taking the test is up in the dojo.

EFT Clinic

Many of you have heard me talk about EFT or Emotional Freedom Techniques, as a form of self help for virtually any problem you can think of. It is an easy tapping routine you learn to do on yourself which uses several key acupuncture points on the meridians. This energy healing technique was originally designed to cure people of phobias in record breaking time. Subsequently people have tried this very simple yet highly effective technique on a myriad of problems both physical and emotional. The key to getting very effective results with EFT is getting to the core issue underlying the problem. Working with someone, one-on-one or in a group, can often help you be more effective then on your own.

EFT group workshops are on the last Sunday of the month starting at 1pm There will be a $15 fee for the session. The sessions are open to the public. Clinics will only run if sufficient numbers warrant it at that time, otherwise an alternate date will be arranged. Please call / write to register for the session in advance.

Aikido Hajime Class

On Thursday May 28th we will be doing our "Hajime" training in the adult Aikido class. "Hajime" means to begin and we will be doing techniques rapidly on that command. It is an excellent cardio workout as well as an excellent training tool. When you must react quickly over and over to a command, you have no time to think about what you are going to do - you can only do. That is important in the martial arts. Be sure not to miss this class.

Karate Friendship Night

We would like to invite any karate-ka who practice Matsubyashi-Ryu to join us for the last Thursday of every month. After a good warm-up of kihon (basics) we start kata practice and sometimes also add Bunkai (application) and Yakusoku Kumite (pre-arranged sparring) practice to the evening. Our dojo is open to all, regardless of rank or associations. This is a non-political dojo and a fun night of training together in the true spirit of Nagamine Shoshin Sensei's Karate-Do. If you are interested in joining us please contact us for directions and times or feel free to drop in for the 8:45pm adult class on the last Thursday of each month. The next Kata night is Thursday May 28th
