Heard Around The Dojo
I am very excited to be able to offer to all of you a chance to help out in a very worthy cause. The Foundation for Prader-Willi Research Canada. Our own James in the children's karate program has Prader-Willi Syndrome and it is a genetic, complex, life threatening medical disorder that affects the body's hormone system, muscle strength, cognition/learning, behaviour, pain, sleep, temperature regulation and appetite. For someone with Prader-Willi Syndrome, the feeling of fullness after eating does not exist. This is combined with a decreased metabolism requiring half the calories of a typical person of the same size and weight. There is no cure for Prader-Willi Syndrome but continued research makes it hopeful.
To raise awareness and funds for research for Prader-Willi Syndrome, a walkathon has been organized for this coming Sunday, June 12th at Alex Robertson Park (700 Sandy Beach Rd, Pickering). Registration for the 2 km walk will begin at 9:30am and the walk itself will begin at 10:30am.
You can help in several ways. You can participate in the walk and help raise money from sponsors, donate money yourself or tell others about this event and Prader-Willi Syndrome to help raise awareness.
You can register or donate on-line and High School students can earn community service hours as well.
When participants raise $40, they receive a free event t-shirt and a pedometer. There will also be prizes based on level of fundraising.
The Charity is the Foundation for Prader-Willi Research Canada and for additional information you can email Sarah Corkum at firstname.lastname@example.org or contact the dojo for phone numbers.
I know this is short notice but lets see what we can do in a week. Martial artists move quickly and decisively. I know you will support me as we do something for one of our fellow Renseikan students.
To donate on-line enter Corkum as the walker's name and choose Sarah or Jason
Come Celebrate Rick's 50th with a Fundraiser
Please join us as we help celebrate our own Aikido sempai Rick Elwood's 50th birthday with a fundraiser for Barth Syndrome.
The party will be at Grizzly’s Bar & Grill, 985 Brock Road (at Bayly St), Pickering on Saturday June 18th starting at 8pm. There will be light refreshments and a live band later in the evening.
We will gratefully accept donations to Barth Syndrome Foundation of Canada (www.barthsyndrome.ca). Barth syndrome is a serious and life threatening condition that affects men and boys, and has affected members of Rick and Lynn Elwood’s family including their son. This charity helps with education, awareness and scientific research grants and people from the Renseikan dojo family have been supporters.
We would love to see you at this fun evening.
Please RSVP to email@example.com.
National Jodo Test Results
Congratulations to Chuka Iweze for passing his 1kkyu (1st kyu) in Jodo over the May long weekend.
The Annual National Jodo and Iaido Seminar and Testing was held at the University of Guelph over the May long weekend. The seminar was well attended with students coming from Chile, the USA, all parts of Canada and of course our Senseis coming from Japan. Namitome Sensei 8th dan hanshi and Furakawa Sensei 8th hanshi taught an incredible seminar and prepared everyone for their tests on Monday.
Jodo is really growing in Canada, and around the world, and we are lucky to have the opportunity to train under such talented sensei. The next National seminar is planned for October in Toronto. Please plan on attending this important event.
Bring a Friend Week
Take this wonderful opportunity to introduce your friends to the fascinating world of martial arts. Bring your friends out to participate in your karate, aikido or jodo class. They will have the opportunity to start training in the martial arts on a regular basis as a result of your introduction. To say "Thank You", you will receive one FREE month of training for each friend's paid membership. (Limited time offer. Conditions apply)
Kata and Hajime Nights
The separate karate and aikido Friendship nights will continue for June.
The Karate Kata/Friendship Night will be on Thursday June 30th at 7pm. The class will run from 7pm to 9pm and will be for all karate students. After the class, we will go out for food and socializing.
The Aikido Hajime/Friendship Night will be Thursday July 14th beginning at 9pm. We will be going out afterwards for food and socializing.
Soke Nagamine July Seminar
Plan on attending special classes and seminar with Soke Takayoshi Nagamine, 10 dan Hanshi-sei, Matsubayashi-Ryu Karate-Do the week of July 7-12, 2011. The details are available at the dojo.
Black Belt classes run every Sunday at the Hombu dojo. Special classes for Karate and Aikido black belts from 10am (Karate) and 11:30am (Aikido). Please plan on attending these exclusive classes.
We are pleased to announce we will be able to run Special Jodo Seminars throughout the year. Seminars will be tailored to your specific level and goals. Please call or write to arrange an Introductory or comprehensive Jodo Seminar for your dojo or group. Jodo is a 500 year old martial art that can be practiced by anyone, regardless of age or physical conditioning. It is a fantastic art to cross-train in or learn for it's own merits. Manuals, weapons and instructional DVDs can also be purchased as part of a package.
Help Feed the World
Please click on the new link on our sidebars (as well as above). By playing this educational game (vocabulary builder), you can help feed the world. The sponsors of this site donate 20 grains of rice for every correct answer you get while playing the game. They work with the United Nations World Food Program.
Renseikan Dojo Shirts
We are taking orders for Renseikan Dojo T-Shirts, Crew neck Sweat shirts & Hooded Sweat Shirts. They come in a variety of colours and you have your choice of which martial art is on the front of the shirt. Print and fill out the order form and bring it in to the dojo to get your order processed. It can take 10-14 days to get the shirts so don't delay, order yours today. We also have weapons, uniforms and other good ideas. Please ask for our new price list at the dojo soon.
Renseikan Dojo Crests
The Renseikan Dojo Crests are now available at the dojo. They can be used in many ways, on your dogi it should go on the left side, over your heart.
Bring A Friend Promotion
Introduce your friends or family to the martial arts. You can bring as many people as you like to try a martial arts class with you. All we need is a signed waiver (by a parent if the person is under 18 years old) and tell them to bring track pants and a t-shirt for the class.
On Thursday June 2nd we will be doing our "Hajime" training in the adult Aikido class. "Hajime" means to begin and we will be doing techniques rapidly on that command. It is an excellent cardio workout as well as an excellent training tool. When you must react quickly over and over to a command, you have no time to think about what you are going to do - you can only do. That is important in the martial arts. Be sure not to miss this class. We will be going out after the class for a social event.
Karate Friendship Night
We would like to invite any karate-ka who practice Matsubyashi-Ryu to join us for the last Thursday of every month. After a good warm-up of kihon (basics) we start kata practice and sometimes also add Bunkai (application) and Yakusoku Kumite (pre-arranged sparring) practice to the evening. Our dojo is open to all, regardless of rank or associations. This is a non-political dojo and a fun night of training together in the true spirit of Nagamine Shoshin Sensei's Karate-Do. If you are interested in joining us please contact us for directions and times or feel free to drop in for the 7:00pm Youth/Family class and or for the 8pm Adult class. The next Kata night is Thursday May 26th
