Heard Around The Dojo Summer Schedule The Summer Schedule starts the first week of July. The Summer Schedule is available for download here or you can simply review it here. Renseikan Dojo T-Shirts We are taking orders for Renseikan Dojo T-Shirts. They come in a variety of colours and you have your choice of which martial art is on the front of the shirt. Print and fill out the order form and bring it in to the dojo to get your order processed. It can take two weeks to get the shirts so don't delay, order yours today. Filming Day
As part of the Toronto International Film Festival's Corporate Sponsorship Program, filming went on during all the classes Saturday June 9th. Hayley, an aspiring film maker herself, helped out. The short video being made for us is a "Thank You" for our contribution and support of the Toronto International Film Festival's independant film makers. Sensei Frank Baehr 40th Anniversary
Last Saturday (June 9th) many students both current and past got together to celebrate Sensei Frank Baehr's opening of the first Matsubayashi-Ryu Karate-Do Dojo in Canada, 40 years ago. Maria Galati of the Columbus Centre Dojo organized this event and Renseikan Dojo hosted it. We had great food and Sensei Baehr provided a presentation of his 46 years in karate-do. It was an excellent time to see old friends and talk about the past and the future of Matsubayashi-Ryu in Canada. All people doing Matsubayashi-Ryu in Canada can trace their roots back to Mr. Frank Baehr (the first person to teach Matsubayashi-Ryu Karate-Do in Canada) or Mr. Quai Wong. Tuesday June 5th Shioda Yasuhisa Sensei of the Hombu Dojo (Tokyo, Japan) gave a clinic in Scarborough to a packed dojo. The training was very fast paced and all the students from Renseikan Dojo had a great time. Karasawa Sensei Tribute and Seimeikan Reunion
After the Shioda Sensei Clinic we had the opportunity to pay tribute to Karasawa Sensei who had retired a few years ago. This was a tribute to his many years of Aikido and his tremendous contribution and effect to Yoshinkan Aikido in Canada. So many dojo in Canada owe their start to Karasawa Sensei and many of them were represented there Tuesday night. We also had the very good fortune to have many of the original Seimeikan students reunite for this evening. Since Seimeikan Dojo is also retired it has been a long time since many of us had seen each other. It was a very good evening. Thanks to Alan for arranging the event.
New Look at the Dojo
Thank you to all the students who helped pay for the new floor at the dojo. You will get to see and walk on it every day. A very big thank you to Oskar for figuring out how to put the floor down correctly and thank you to everyone who gave up their Sunday to do this. Also thank you to everyone who came out Friday night to tear down the front entrance wall. The dojo looks much bigger and brighter. We will have to plan a new wall and shoe shelves for the winter. Film Making Day As part of the Toronto International Film Festival's Corporate Sponsorship Program, Renseikan Dojo will be having two short commercials filmed on Saturday June 9th from 8:30am - 1pm. The commercials are a 'Thank You' for us sponsoring a film through this fundraiser. It is our intention to film various aspects of all the classes. We would like everyone to attend this day so we can have good filming. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to write or call the dojo about it. Frank Baehr - 40 years in Karate-Do
Please join us Saturday June 9th at 6pm for a Pot-Luck dinner to celebrate Sensei Frank Baehr's opening of the first Matsubayashi-Ryu Karate-Do Dojo in Canada 40 years ago. Many of you know Sensei Baehr and for that do not this will be a wonderful opportunity for you to meet him. Sensei Baehr started with Nagamine Shoshin Sensei and Morita Sensei and helped with the translation of Nagamine Sensei's book while living in the Nagamine Dojo in Okinawa. He has many interesting stories and will be only too willing to share them with you.
It will be a Pot-Luck dinner at our dojo followed by speeches and a presentation by Sensei Baehr of his 46 years in
Karate-Do. Soke Shioda Sensei Clinic Plan on joining us in Scarborough for Soke Shioda's Aikido Clinic on Tuesday June 5th from 7pm - 9pm. This will be a very exciting event followed by a very important presentation to Karasawa Sensei for his lifetime contribution to Aikido by Soke Shioda Sensei. Please see the flyer in the dojo for fees and details. Please let the office know in advance if you will be attending so we can notify the Scarborough dojo of the numbers attending. Congratulations to Joseph Vallejo for passing his Nidan test and Brad Clark for passing his Shodan test in Guelph on the May long weekend. We will have pictures up soon. It was a great weekend for everyone who attended and the 6 top Japanese Jodo Sensei were exceptional teachers.
Dojo Work Crew Everyone worked so hard at getting the dojo open for business after we moved locations earlier this year but we still have some finishing to do. There is still some painting, wiring and building that needs done. We are going to organize a Dojo Renovation Weekend where we can work Friday, Saturday and Sunday and get the jobs done. It may take a few weekends but if we have enough people we may get it all done in one. There will be a sign up sheet (along with a list of most of the jobs that need done) in the dojo soon. Thank you to everyone who contributed to the dojo fund. We tried to think of something to get for the dojo that would be useful, needed and everyone could enjoy. We finally decided on getting flooring for the entrance, hall and sitting area. You may have noticed the boxes piled up under the weapons - this is the flooring and one of the jobs that we will be scheduling during our Dojo Renovation Weekend. Thank you all again! Grand Opening Demonstration We always held our annual demonstration in the autumn and we would like to continue that tradition. We will be starting to train for the demonstration in the coming weeks and will continue throughout the summer and kick off September with our Grand Opening Demonstration. The tentative date is Saturday/Sunday September 15/16. That means the summer will be very important for our demonstration training. Please plan to get out to as many classes as you can during the summer and of course right now as well. Yudansha Test Results
Congratulations to Rick Elwood and Lynn Elwood on their yudansha tests Sunday April 29. Rick passed his nidan (second degree black belt)in Aikido with the help of Raymond Chong and Saeed Mirafzal. Lynn passed her sandan (third degree black belt) in Karate-Do with the help of Joseph Vallejo, Rob Knox and Mark Hamlyn. Both Rick and Lynn did an excellent job and we are very proud of them. We should have more pictures soon.
Some of the Renseikan Dojo Yudansha who came to show their support for Rick and Lynn EFT Clinic Many of you have heard me talk about EFT or Emotional Freedom Techniques, as a form of self help for virtually any problem you can think of. It is an easy tapping routine you learn to do on yourself which uses several key acupuncture points on the meridians. This energy healing technique was originally designed to cure people of phobias in record breaking time. Subsequently people have tried this very simple yet highly effective technique on a myriad of problems both physical and emotional. The key to getting very effective results with EFT is getting to the core issue underlying the problem. Working with someone, one-on-one or in a group, can often help you be more effective then on your own. The next EFT group workshop is on Sunday June 24th from 10am - 12 noon. There will be a $15 fee for the session. The sessions are open to the public. DVDs Now Available We now have available DVDs of all previous Dojo events, including your last kyu or dan test. Sensei Christian will be giving clinics in Matsubayashi-Ryu Karate-Do on Friday July 13th at Anshin Dojo in Mississauga and Saturday July 14th at our Renseikan Dojo here in Pickering. Everyone is invited to attend.The tentative schedule is below. Our aim is to get a really good turnout and keep the fees down to a minimum. A sign up sheet is in the dojo. Christian Sensei is a 7th dan from Belleville, Illinois USA. He travels to Okinawa on regular basis and is committed to teaching Matsubayashi_ryu the way Nagamine Shoshin Sensei wanted his karate to be taught. Everyone should plan on attending this event. Canada Day Weekend The dojo will be closed Saturday June 30th and Monday July 2nd to celebrate Canada Day.
On Wednesday June 27th we will be doing our "Hajime" training in the adult Aikido class. "Hajime" means to begin and we will be doing techniques rapidly on that command. It is an excellent cardio workout as well as an excellent training tool. When you must react quickly over and over to a command, you have no time to think about what you are going to do - you can only do. That is important in the martial arts. Be sure not to miss this class. After the class we will hold our Shinbokukai (Friendship event) at a local restaurant or in the dojo.
Karate Friendship Night We would like to invite any karate-ka who practice Matsubyashi-Ryu to join us for the last Thursday of every month. After a good warm-up of kihon (basics) we start kata practice and sometimes also add Bunkai (application) and Yakusoku Kumite (pre-arranged sparring) practice to the evening. Our dojo is open to all, regardless of rank or associations. This is a non-political dojo and a fun night of training together in the true spirit of Nagamine Shoshin Sensei's Karate-Do. If you are interested in joining us please contact us for directions and times or feel free to drop in for the 8:45pm adult class on the last Thursday of each month. The next Kata night is Thursday June 28th.
