Heard Around The Dojo

Dojo Spring Cleaning

On Saturday April 16th at 12:30pm we will start our Annual Dojo Spring Cleaning. This is a very important event in the dojo calendar year. Cleanliness is paramount to many spiritual aspect of the martial arts. We, at Renseikan Dojo, hold this idea that Cleanliness is next to Godliness and we all take our part in maintaining the dojo. Please join us, with vacuum, bucket, rags etc at 12:30pm. the more people involved the faster and more fun the work is. Please see Lynn (Karate), Rick (Aikido) or Steven (Jodo) if you will NOT be able to attend.

Bring A Friend Week

On Monday, April 18th , 2005 we will begin our Bring-A-Friend Week. This is an excellent opportunity for students to introduce their martial arts training to a friend. Your friend may be a friend, a parent, a teacher, an aunt or uncle, a neighbour - anyone you know who would like to try the martial arts. Tell them to wear track pants and a t-shirt and come out and have fun.

You may bring as many friends to your class as you want, or send them to any of our regular classes in jodo, karate or aikido. Friends who are less than 18 years old should have their parents sign the form available at the dojo or Download in here in Adobe format and bring it with them to the dojo.

Jodo Seminar at Renseikan

We had a good turnout for the April Jodo Seminar, held this month here, at Renseikan Dojo. Attendees trained in kihon tandoku (solo basic), kihon sotai (paired basics) and seitei kata. We are looking forward to the next on May 1st in Guelph and of course the big annual weekend long seminar on the May 24th weekend.

New Time for Aikido Day Classes

Starting April 1st, the Aikido Day Classes will begin at 9:00am and run until 10am. The Karate Day class will follow as usual.

Please pass this information along to anyone who may be able to take advantage of our new time: for example, shift workers, stay-at-home or work-at-home parents or night-school students.

It is our hope that this new time will allow more people to start training in aikido and enjoy the many benefits from early morning workouts.

New schedules will be available April 1st at the dojo and also on-line (pdf) as of April 1st.

Schedule Change ONLY for Thursday April 7th ,2005

On Thursday April 7th, we will be hosting a local Beaver troop and their parents and leaders for an Introduction to Martial Arts class.

The special class for the Beavers will run from 6:30pm - 7:30pm

The Children's class (all ranks) will run from 8pm - 9pm

The Adult class will run from 9pm - 10:15pm

I hope everyone will be able to make it to their class at this different time. Remember this is ONLY for Thursday April 7th and all other Thursdays are at their normal time.

All black belts that are available to help out on Thursday at 6:30pm should let the dojo know as soon as possible.

Seimeikan Dojo Reunion

Many of the former senior students of Seimeikan Dojo, which closed March 2003, got together at the Regal Palace Restaurant on Saturday March 5 for a reunion. The 13 course Chinese meal was only surpassed by the great conversation and memories shared. Since Karasawa Sensei's retirement from the martial arts, many of his former students have not seen each other. This was a very enjoyable evening and we hope to do more of this. Thanks to Peter and Tak for making all the arrangements. Pictures can be seen here.

February Kata Night

Thanks to all who made it out on February's Kata Night. We had a great evening of Kihon(basics), Kata, Bunkai(application of kata) and Yakusoku Kumite(Pre-arranged sparring). We also had a great time at Boston Pizza afterwards. Plan to join us next time (March 31st).

New Renseikan Dojo Crests

Our New Renseikan Dojo Crests are now available at the dojo. They can be used in many ways, on your dogi it should go on the left side, over your heart.

Karate Kata Night
Aikido Hajime Class
Jodo Seminar - Guelph

Karate Kata Night

We would like to invite any karate-ka who practice Matsubyashi-Ryu to join us for the last Thursday of every month. After a good warm-up of kihon (basics) we start kata practice and sometimes also add Bunkai (application) and Yakusoku Kumite (pre-arranged sparring) practice to the evening. Our dojo is open to all, regardless of rank or associations. This is a non-political dojo and a fun night of training together in the true spirit of Nagamine Shoshin Sensei's Karate-Do. If you are interested in joining us please contact us for directions and times or feel free to drop in for the 8pm adult class on the last Thursday of each month. The next Kata night is Thursday April 28th

Aikido Hajime Class

On Friday April 30th we will be doing our "Hajime" training in the adult Aikido class. "Hajime" means to begin and we will be doing techniques rapidly on that command. It is an excellent cardio workout as well as an excellent training tool. When you must react quickly over and over to a command, you have no time to think about what you are going to do - you can only do. That is important in the martial arts. Be sure not to miss this class.

Jodo Seminar - Guelph

On Sunday May 1st There will be a Jodo seminar at the University of Guelph 1pm - 4pm. This is an excellent opportunity to practice for the kyu / dan testing later in May. There is a $20 seminar fee to help support Jodo in Canada and bring the sensei from Japan here in May.
