Heard Around The Dojo Inspiration Kagami Biraki Shiki 2008 Kagami Biraki Shiki and celebration was held Sunday January 13, 2008. The event was well attended. After a explanation of Kagami Biraki, the assistant instructors gave a brief but inspiring demonstration. As always they did a great job. Then there was a speech by sensei followed by a wonderful pot-luck meal.Click on the picture above for some pictures of the event. We hope to have more soon. Kagami Biraki Shiki 2008 Sunday January 13, 2008 will be our Kagami Biraki Shiki and celebration. This event is equivalent to the Martial Arts New Year, and is therefore a very important event in the life of the dojo. Please plan on attending this event (1pm - 3pm) followed by a Pot Luck Party. Please sign up at the dojo soon Our start of the year (2008) training ran Friday January 4th. The numbers were smaller then our Keiko Osame but there were quite a few people under the weather and could not attend. Sensei Joe took some pictures during the classes and after the last class, we had some snacks and drinks to bring in the new year of training. Every year I receive a picture of the Hatsuhinode ( 1st Sunrise of the New Year in Japan). Every year a different location and all quite interesting. Here the Taiyo (Sun, Solar Progenitor, Divine source of our lives/existence) and beautiful Kama (tortoise shaped hills) contrast with the urban industrial landscape of Yokkaichi City. Click on the above picture for some photographs of Keiko Hajime 2008. We should start collecting New Year's sunrise pictures from Canada, different locations. If anyone thought to take such a picture this year, I would like to post it here. Renseikan Dojo Shirts We are taking orders for Renseikan Dojo T-Shirts, Crew neck Sweat shirts & Hooded Sweat Shirts. They come in a variety of colours and you have your choice of which martial art is on the front of the shirt. Print and fill out the order form and bring it in to the dojo to get your order processed. It can take 10-14 days to get the shirts so don't delay, order yours today. We also have weapons, uniforms and other good ideas. Please ask for our new price list at the dojo soon. Our end of year training on Friday December 28th was a great success. According to Buddhist thinking there are 108 Defilements (sins of man) "Hyaku Hachi No Bonno" and upon the exhaustion or elimination of the 108 Defilements through shugyo (the austere practice of bodymind transcendence), one enters a state of enlightenment. The number 108 figures very strongly in Buddhist and other belief systems around the world. The juzu or mallas (rosaries) of Buddhist priests have 108 beads for this same reason. In Japan they ring Temple bells 108 times at midnight on New Year's Eve. Some interesting figures from astronomy are that the distance between the earth and the sun equals about 108 (actually 107.???) times the sun's diameter. Likewise, it so happens that the distance between the earth and the moon equals about 108 (actually 109.166) times the moon's diameter. That sun and moon look equally big in the earthly sky is the immediate result of their having the same ratio between distance and diameter. It so happens that the sun's diameter approximately equals 108 times the earth's diameter. In Karate we have a kata called Gojushiho (54 steps) and 54 is one-half 108, also the very first kata we teach to children is Niju Shichi Waza (27 Movements) and 27 is one-half 54, one-quarter 108. The number 108 is very important to Buddhism and Karate-Do For our Shugyo training, the Jodo class performed 108 Kata while the Aikido class performed 108 techniques with their partners and the Karate class also did 108 Kata. The effect was fantastic and I know everyone who participated really enjoyed the evening. We ended the evening with a Kampai and conversation. I am still waiting for some pictures from the Jodo class. New Makiwara Special thanks go to Tony Gibson, who donated a makiwara (one his father had from years ago) and he went out and had a frame custom built for it. Tony, Don and Sensei put the makiwara up on the Friday night and Sensei Joe provided the padding. Please enjoy the training and strengthen your wrists, fists and develop atemi through strict and diligent makiwara training DVDs Now Available We now have available DVDs of all previous Dojo events, including your last kyu or dan test. Please order from the dojo or email the dojo. Renseikan Dojo Crests The Renseikan Dojo Crests are now available at the dojo. They can be used in many ways, on your dogi it should go on the left side, over your heart. Upcoming Events
Click on any of the upcoming events listed below to learn more: EFT Clinic Many of you have heard me talk about EFT or Emotional Freedom Techniques, as a form of self help for virtually any problem you can think of. It is an easy tapping routine you learn to do on yourself which uses several key acupuncture points on the meridians. This energy healing technique was originally designed to cure people of phobias in record breaking time. Subsequently people have tried this very simple yet highly effective technique on a myriad of problems both physical and emotional. The key to getting very effective results with EFT is getting to the core issue underlying the problem. Working with someone, one-on-one or in a group, can often help you be more effective then on your own. The next EFT group workshop is on Sunday January 27th from 10am - 12 noon. There will be a $15 fee for the session. The sessions are open to the public. On Wednesday January 30th we will be doing our "Hajime" training in the adult Aikido class. "Hajime" means to begin and we will be doing techniques rapidly on that command. It is an excellent cardio workout as well as an excellent training tool. When you must react quickly over and over to a command, you have no time to think about what you are going to do - you can only do. That is important in the martial arts. Be sure not to miss this class. After the class we will hold our Shinbokukai (Friendship event) at a local restaurant or in the dojo. Karate Friendship Night We would like to invite any karate-ka who practice Matsubyashi-Ryu to join us for the last Thursday of every month. After a good warm-up of kihon (basics) we start kata practice and sometimes also add Bunkai (application) and Yakusoku Kumite (pre-arranged sparring) practice to the evening. Our dojo is open to all, regardless of rank or associations. This is a non-political dojo and a fun night of training together in the true spirit of Nagamine Shoshin Sensei's Karate-Do. If you are interested in joining us please contact us for directions and times or feel free to drop in for the 8:45pm adult class on the last Thursday of each month. The next Kata night is Thursday January 31st Karate Promotions Please see the Archives for past promotions. Aikido Promotions Please see the Archives for past promotions.
