This year Renseikan Dojo, in association with Zen Living Studios, will be holding week-long summer day camps for children ages 7 and up. The camps will run Monday to Friday, from 9:00am - 3:30pm. There are two camp sessions available, and registration will be on a first come first serve basis. The cost for each session is $150.00 plus a small materials fee (expected to be between $10 - $12). Before and after camp care will also be available at an additional fee if required.

In the Martial Arts component of the camp, the children will learn karate, aikido, judo and basic self-defence. They will also participate in various creative arts, including clay sculpture, painting and collage (mandalas and self-portraits), book arts (altered books and handmade books) and mail art (postcard art and artistamps).

Children's Karate

We offer three classes per week for children age 6 - 14. Children over 14 are encouraged to join our Adult karate classes, where they will receive the challenge more appropriate for their age and size. Each class runs 50 minutes and begins and ends with a short period of quiet time. As with all karate classes the emphasis is on traditional karate, including blocks, punches and kicks while in various karate stances. We use Japanese terminology throughout and the children will have fun learning the terms for the physical movements they are doing. The children wear the traditional white dogi (uniform) and their level of personal advancement is indicated by the colour belt they wear during class.

Beginners (white belts) have separate classes so they can concentrate on learning the basic movements and work towards earning their first colour belt (yellow). The intermediate and advanced children (colour belts) are taught together. This allows the intermediate students to be encouraged and inspired by the advanced children and the advanced children have the opportunity and obligation to assist the intermediate students by setting a good example both in and out of class.
